Topic: As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate.

Task:

Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position.

Response:

I disagree to a great extent that dependence on technology is deteriorating our ability to think and solve problems. I rather feel it helps us to perform a lot better in our daily lives. Let's take following examples:

• Just imagine if GRE were only a paper based test and not computer based test how much paper would have gone for a waste every year. This would have demanded a lot more cut in trees thus contributing to higher level of global warming. Test taking through computers, reading e-books as compared to paper books can save a lot many trees there by helping us to maintain the ecological balance.
• If  I have to go to a place where I have never been too or I am in a foreign country google maps are a great help in finding directions. Or if I want to cook "peanut dumplings" or any other dish for which I do not know the recipe, I can simply open a you tube video that can teach me how to prepare it.
• Advances in medicines and pharmaceutical domain have saved a lot of lifes. The great cricketer Yuvraj Singh's recovery from cancer is miraculaous.It has been made possible only because doctors could make use of the latest technology for the treatment. 
• Even the field of education has been equipped with commendable technology teaching aids like various mobile applications for students to track their progress, quiz themselves, prepare flash cards etc. Distant learning where teacher a students are in completely different geographies can benifit themselves using Skype or any other video conferencing tool. Infact I  have installed a lot of "Play and Learn" apps on my iPad for my 20-months old son. It's amazing to see how his brain is developing and grasping things from his interactions with these applications for past one year. 

I have often heard people saying that the great technology marvels like computers, tablets, play stations, smart phones etc are turning more humans into couch potates. However I feel there also exists great products like activity monitors( Nike Fuel band, Fit-bit Ultra etc) , Wii, Xbox-360-Kinect etc which have absolutely redefined the way a person can keep a track of his/her fitness. The only aspect that needs to be kept in mind is where to draw a line between right use and over dependence on technology.
